Miguel Ortega took his hat off at the bottom of the stairs and did not notice he had done it.
He noticed the stairs. Twelve of them, carpeted, with a brass rail nobody on the line had ever had a reason to touch. In four years he had walked past the bottom of them a thousand times on his way to the loading dock and had never once put a foot on the first one. That was not a rule. It was just the shape of the building. The kitchen was downstairs and the general manager was upstairs, and between them there were three people whose job it was to carry things up so you did not have to.
Today the three people had said no. Not unkindly. Chef had said it while breaking down a case of halibut, without looking up: anything off the wedding shift goes to Ray, I’m not signing that one. Which meant the stairs.
Miguel had a swap arranged. Danny would take Saturday. He had asked Danny twice and Danny had said yes twice, and Miguel had checked the schedule himself to make sure Danny was not on somewhere else. He had the whole thing in a sentence. He had practiced the sentence on the walk over from the kitchen and it was a good sentence, short, with the work already done inside it, the kind of thing a manager could say yes to without having to think.
This is an opening excerpt, not the complete chapter.
